THE STORY BEHIND KACOKE MADIT HOTELS

The Acholi word “Kacoke Madit” literally translated means “the big gathering or a big meeting place.” The Hotel is named after the historic Acholi led peace-making efforts, the “Kacoke Madit Initiative” between 1996-2006 which laid the foundation for the return of peace in Northern Uganda. The Kacoke Madit Initiative contributed significantly to the ending of the over two decades civil war between the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) led by Joseph Kony and Government of Uganda under Yoweri Kaguta Museveni from 1986 – 2008. The Hotel celebrates the great Luo spirit of dialogue and togetherness, encapsulated in our motto “Ripe Aye Teko or Unity is Strength.”

According to Stephen Oola, C.E.O of Kacoke Madit Hotels, “the hotel encapsulate all the good and bad memories of the wartime in Acholi land…the site where the Kacoke Madit Hotel is situated in Gulu City, was not only one of my favorite birds hunting spot growing up in the early 1990s but was also a major LRA route and ambush spot. At the same time, many people took refuge (alub) there to escape abductions by LRA and wanton killings by errand Government forces.”
